WEB N.V. and Ecopower Bonaire B.V. Sign Power Purchase Agreement
En-route to an environmentally friendly power supply on Bonaire, Water and Energy Bonaire (WEB), N.V. and Ecopower Bonaire, B.V. reached an important milestone yesterday when they opened the Sorobon Wind Turbine and officially signed the “Power Purchase Agreement.”
Ecopower Bonaire, B.V. is a consortium consisting of Evelop International, Enercom GmbH, and MAN B&W Diesel. The planned development for both wind and biodiesel generation has a stated cost of USD 55M (nearly FL 100 M) for the island. It is hoped that when the island is less dependent upon traditional fuel sources that the cost of electric may go down for island residents and businesses. (Source: WEB, N.V. and New Energy Finance)
Wonderful news..now, let’s hope the WEB bill decreases.

I’ve heard that emission norms for the diesel powerplant that is going to be build are quite lenient…WAY too lenient!
The diesel power plant will make use of diesel of a very bad quality which makes the needs for non-lenient emission norms even greater.
Finally, they’ve been presenting us with a picture of Bonaire getting its electricity by 100% environmentally sustainable energy production in the near future. However, to put that into perspective: during a hearing, mr Hart (WEB) has said that they will start making use of BIO-diesel ONLY when the price of bio-diesel is low enough to be able to compete with the price of the (still relatively) cheap (because it being bad quality) diesel which they will use until then.
I’d say things should be done well from the start. The use of windmills should not be a way to compensate the polluting effects of a diesel power plant in order to try to contribute to the (as of yet undeserved) image of Bonaire as an eco-island.
Voice your questions and concerns on the web, with the government and in the press and let’s have the Ecopower project REALLY be eco!
