CIEE Announces the Next Public Presentation on April 23rd, 2011
"Chemical Ecology of Caribbean Sponges” is the title of a public presentation to be held Saturday April 23, at CIEE. The topic will be presented by Joseph R. Pawlik, a marine biologist at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington.
The presentation will focus on a testing of the hypothesis that reefs that are well protected from fishing will have greater populations of sponge-eating fishes, and higher populations of chemically defended sponge species in the sponge community, than reefs that are overfished. The endeavor is being conducted by Mr. Pawlik and three others, who are testing the hypothesis by doing surveys of sponge, coral and fish diversity and abundance on overfished and protected reefs in the Caribbean. The presentation will be held from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at the CIEE Research Station at Kaya Gobernador. N. Debrot #26. All are invited to attend and admission is free. (Source: CIEE Bonaire)
