Bonaire Personal Shopper Opens for Business, Launches New Web Site

Filling a definite need for visiting tourists or those who own vacation homes, the new Bonaire Personal Shopper is ready to help and assist with any shopping needs on Bonaire, including food and beverages, gifts, or other items.

Operated by Renee Leach, the new service will definitely make it easier for arriving tourists to find a fully stocked refrigerator or pantry upon their arrival, thus saving them precious vacation time as they won’t have to shop for necessities.  Owners of vacation homes may also take advantage of this new service so they may come “home” to a cool drink, a quick sandwich, or have supplies for a first night’s dinner at home.

And Renee doesn’t limit the service to just groceries or beverages, as those who need a special gift, but don’t have the time to search the island for it, can call upon the Bonaire Personal Shopper.  As Renee says, “Shopping is my second love, and is what I do best--after leading snorkel excursions, that is!”

The new web site is available by clicking here, and offers some tips about what to expect from the stores on Bonaire in regard to brand names, as well as a shopping list of necessities from which one can choose.  Any special items not on the list can be requested via the on-line order form.  Upon receipt of an order, Renee will confirm costs and availability to the person submitting the order.  They then have the opportunity to complete the transaction if they so desire by using a credit card to pay for the order.

With the majority of Bonaire accommodations providing full kitchens or kitchenettes, the Bonaire Personal Shopper is sure to provide an added value making a Bonaire vacation easier.  (Source:  Bonaire Personal Shopper)

Dive Friends Bonaire Upgrades Retail Equipment Facilities with SCUBAPRO and Mares

Diving is an equipment-intensive and dynamic sport, with new evolving technology which continually makes it safer while increasing the fun and enjoyment of diving.  In order to provide the best to its customers, Dive Friends Bonaire has recently upgraded two of its facilities with a full line of equipment from either SCUBAPRO or Mares.  All are invited to stop in to see the latest offerings from these manufacturers, and the knowledgeable dive crew at either Dive Friends facility can assist with making important decisions about equipment.

SCUBAPRO Dealership at Dive Friends @ Yellow Submarine: Dive Friends @ Yellow Submarine is pleased to announce that this facility is now an official SCUBAPRO dealer.  The interior of the dive facility has been remodeled to highlight the full range of SCUBAPRO equipment, which is now available for sale on Bonaire.

At this location, customers will be able to choose from the popular Vu, Solera, and Orbit masks with Laguna, Escape, and Eclipse snorkels.  Both the men’s Knight Hawk and the women’s Lady Hawk BCDs will be available with the MK2 regulator line and R295 octopus.  There’s also a choice in exposure protection with Profile wetsuits as well as the Caribbean shorty.  UWATEC/Aladin instruments and computers are offered.

SCUBAPRO UWATEC is one of the industry’s premier manufacturers of scuba diving equipment, and, by utilizing their equipment in the rental department at Dive Friends @ Yellow Submarine, visitors who require rental equipment are assured of having the best available to them.

MARES at Dive Friends @ Dive Inn:  In order to provide even more choice, Dive Friends Bonaire will be revamping their Dive Inn location into a retail center for Mares products.  For nearly 60 years, Mares has been recognized around the world as a leading manufacturer of technologically advanced diving products.

At the Dive Friends @ Dive Inn facility, customers may choose between Liquid Skin masks and goggles, the extremely easy swimming Avanti fins, as well as a wide assortment of Mares regulators and BDCs.

Both SCUBAPRO UWATEC and MARES products also will be available at Dive Friend’s two retail stores in Kralendijk—Dive Friends @ Dive Retail Outlet and Dive Friends @ Divers Discount—both located on Kaya Grandi.  In addition to these two new lines, the retail stores will continue to stock the best equipment from Sherword, Cressi, and Tusa.  For additional information, click here to visit their web site.  (Source:  Dive Friends Bonaire)

New Options for Tourists and Residents for Food Shopping and Sandwiches In Hato, Bonaire

The area of the northern “hotel row” in Hato, just north of Kralendijk, has seen an explosion of development in recent years, and now the area is providing additional services to both tourists and residents in the form of sandwich shops and grocery stores.

The new Eli Deli, which just opened a few weeks ago, is located just north of the Hato traffic rotary in the District shopping mall.  Eli Deli is open seven days a week (schedule does vary by weekday or weekend) and offers omelets and other egg dishes for breakfast and deli sandwiches for lunch or throughout the afternoon.  It’s an ideal spot for divers wanting to pick up sandwiches for between their dives, without the hassle of parking in Kralendijk.  Ana, the owner/operator, goes to great lengths to be sure her customers are happy with such signature sandwiches as her parma ham sandwich with pesto and olives, lettuce, and tomato, but Ana will also build any sandwich to order.  She has a nice assortment of deli meats and cheeses, and customers can eat in the shop, al fresco, or take away.

Two new grocery stores are also making shopping much easier for visitors without transportation who are staying in the northern “hotel row.” The Hato Mini-Market & Bakery has just opened across the street from Eli Deli in the Sand Dollar shopping mall.  This mini-mart offers many of the staples that visitors will want in their rooms for quick meals and has plans to add a bakery soon.

Just up the road a bit further north, the Zhung Kong Supermarket is located just opposite the northern entrance to Hamlet.  For the size of the store, the Zhung Kong Supermarket offers an amazing array of items for both visitors and residents.

All in all, these three new additions will make shopping for essentials much easier for those staying in the northern areas, giving more time to enjoy one’s vacation!  (Source:  Bonaire Insider reporter)

Severely Wounded Men From U.S. Special Forces are Honored on Bonaire

When we last reported on these special men and their families, visiting Bonaire from the United States, we found them as they were just completing their diving certifications.  The group has had a very busy schedule since that time, and they will continue to enjoy Bonaire until tomorrow, when they leave for home.

The men and their wives and girlfriends spend each morning honing their diving skills with boat dives to various sites on the main island and Klein Bonaire.  Afternoons are spent in a variety of different ways, all focusing upon the island’s special highlights.

Tuesday, after a lunch in Kralendijk at the Palacios family’s Buenos Aires Cafe, the men visited Jewel of Bonaire.  Although they each were provided with a substantial gift certificate, compliments of the store, the men did go a “little crazy” when shopping for gifts for family and friends back home.  That evening, they enjoyed the hospitality of the Palacios family once again at their signature restaurant, Patagonia, where the All-You-Can-Eat Grill Night was definitely a hit.

Wednesday evening brought a special treat--a reception at Bonaire’s Lt. Governor Glenn Thode’s home.  Lt. Governor Thode and his wife were gracious hosts, welcoming the men, their wives and girlfriends, as well as trip leaders, “Big Wave Dave,” Stu, and Marie.  Arriving with a motorcycle escort from Biker’s Bonaire, the group posed for a quick image with their Bonaire Tours & Vacations bus, and then entered the reception.  At this reception, the men were shocked and pleasantly surprised as they were called to the floor to accept their award certificates and silver medals from the Lt. Governor and his wife, as they were named Bonaire ambassadors.  And truly these men will fulfill their roles as ambassadors of our island.  Afterward, it was the men’s turn to thank all of the on-island sponsors who had donated so much to make this dream vacation a reality for them.  Big Wave Dave handed out award certificates to many of the event sponsors, while local television stations filmed the festivities.  The evening’s event was made possible by a donation from Caradonna Dive Adventures, Inc.  View images of the evening’s festivities on the Bonaire Insider Photo Gallery by clicking here.

Today, Friday, is their final full day on island, and this morning, the group is enjoying a sunny day and an island tour, so they can also see what Bonaire offers for topside attractions.  This afternoon, they will go four-wheeling, compliments of Bonaire Quad Tours, and see other parts of the island.  Tonight, they’ll eat like kings at the home of Jack Chalk, general manager of Captain Don’s Habitat, while Jack serves up the famous Texas-styled BBQ for which he is so famous, sponsored by the Jack Chalk Family and Adams Unlimited.

It is due to the tight-knit Bonaire and diving communities that the island can provide such an event to honor these men; it would not be possible without the donations of funds and services by so many who support this cause.  The Bonaire Insider would like to thank the following sponsors, as well as all those who made donations anonymously, for their kind actions:  9Line, Adams Unlimited, Aeris, Alan Gross and Jane Townsend, Bikers Bonaire, Bonaire KFC, Bonaire Talk, Bonaire Quad Tours, Bonaire Tours & Vacations, Budget Car Rental, Buenos Aires Café, Captain Don’s Habitat, Caradonna Dive Adventures, Inc., Care Coalition, Caribbean Travel & Life/Sport Diver/Destination Weddings & Honeymoons/Islands Magazines, Chammyz, DEMA/Be a Diver, Dive Training Magazine, Floris & Nannie, Henderson, Jack Chalk, Jewel Of Bonaire, N.E.K. Advanced Securities Group, NetTech, Oceanic, PADI, Patagonia Restaurant, Princeton Tec, Rum Runners, Scuba Do Rags, Tourism Corporation Bonaire, and XS Scuba.

We will soon say te aworo (Papiamentu for “so long") to these fine men and their families and only add that we hope to see them back on Bonaire again soon.  Even as these folks leave the island, Bonaire’s community still takes care of them!  BonaireTalk.com has even provided their airport departure fees gratis! Jong Bonaire Announces 2010 Bonaire Calendar Available September, 2009

As in past years, the kids enrolled in the Jong Bonaire after-school programs have produced a stunning 2010 calendar, focusing on the island’s cultural heritage.

In a time when the world is shrinking due to mass communication and travel, often culturally rich areas begin to lose their individuality and heritage.  Bonaire continues to strive to maintain its unique heritage, and earlier this year, the kids of Jong Bonaire explored different aspects of their ancestors’ history and culture.

These activities were recorded in images with the kids along with the grandinan (elder Bonaireans) who taught them, based on what their own elders had taught them, and thus their knowledge was passed to another generation.  These images were taken in typical Bonairean locations, and then turned into the 2010 calendar, so there will be a handsome picture on the wall depicting Bonaire all year long for those who purchase the calendar.

The calendar is titled Treasures Discovered by the Kids of Jong Bonaire.  The size is 30x30 cm and each one is individually shrink-wrapped. When opened it measures 30x60cm (12x24 inches) and it is sure to be a welcome gift for all Bonaire aficionados.

Jong Bonaire serves the island’s teenagers each weekday after school and provides a safe, supervised, and caring environment for our youth--the most valuable resource for the future of our community.  Please look for the calendars in September and help support Bonaire’s kids.  (Source:  Jong Bonaire)

New DVD Review:  The Beauty of Bonaire, By Marlis Seelos

The Bonaire Insider has previously highlighted the photography of local resident, Marlis Seelos.  Marlis has just recently published a new DVD of the best of her Bonaire images.

The DVD runs for about 20 minutes with hundreds of images covering all facets of the island, including its flora and fauna, historic architecture, and, of course, the Caribbean Sea.  Affectionately known on Bonaire as the Bird Woman of Bonaire, Marlis’ love for birds and other island animals clearly shines through in the stunning closeup images she displays on the DVD.  Throughout the DVD, relaxing background music plays, which meshes well with her photography.

The Beauty of Bonaire can be purchased at Marlis Sail & Canvas, Island Fashions & Gifts, and Chat ‘n’ Browse.  It’s a highly recommended addition to the media library of any Bonaire aficionado.  (Source:  Bonaire Insider Reporter)
