BWC Hosts Two Mountain Bike Events In September and October, 2010
Bonaire Wellness Connexions will hold two mountain bike events in September and October, including a ride through Washington National Park and the first Bonaire Xtreme Duo mountain bike race.
On Sunday September 19, everyone is welcome to join a mountain bike ride through Washington National Park. This is an excellent opportunity to test out some of the route for the Xtreme Duo ride in October or just enjoy a ride through the park.The route gives you the option of doing a 30km or 45km ride. The longer route will leave from Caribbean Club at 7:00 AM and those who want the shorter route will leave from Dos Pos at 8:00 AM. The price is FL 25.00 or $15 per person. This is considered an intermediate- to advanced-ride. Juice, coffee and sandwiches will be available.
The Extreme Duo mountain bike race will be held on Sunday October 24, 2010 at 7:00 AM. These type of races have become popular on Aruba and Curacao and will now be offered on Bonaire. Single tracks and safe dirt roads will cover 90% of the 75km race course. The course will include some paved roads, which will have traffic volunteers in place to ensure the safety of the riders. The course is diverse, and includes single tracks in Washington National Park, windy and rough trails along the east coast, coral stone trails through Lagoen and Bolivia and the demanding ride up Seru Largu at the end. Entrants must have a team of two riders (Duo), which can be male, female, or mixed. Both entrants must finish the race and the time of the rider who finishes second is the time that counts for the team. Prizes will be given to the top five finishing teams and trophies and cash prizes will be given in some categories.
There are five categories for entrants including women with a combined age between 50 and 100 years, men with a combined age between 50 and 100 years, mixed with a combined age between 50 and 100 years, juniors with a combined age of 50 or under, and seniors with a combined age of 100 or over. Prizes for the women are $400.00, men are $600.00 and mixed are $200.00. Participants must register in advance as the are no registrations on race day. You may register by emailing your team name, country of origin, rider names and category to info@bonairewellness.com. Participants coming from outside Bonaire will be picked up at the airport and transferred to the hotel. The entry fee is FL 50.00 or USD $30.00 per duo. The race will start on the main street of Sabadeco. Drinks will be available at the start, finish and along the route. Officers will be available in case of emergency.
The Divi Flamingo Hotel will host the check-in on Friday October 22 and Saturday October 23 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, where participants may register, pick up their numbers and tee shirt. Sunday check-in is at the start, with the race judges, between 6:00 and 6:45 AM, followed by the 7:00 AM start. At 12:00 PM a lunch will be held for the participants at the Divi Flamingo Hotel, followed by the awards ceremony at 1:00 PM.
Please note that all participants from overseas flying to Bonaire with a bicycle for the Xtreme race will have to be on a list that will be kept by Customs at the airport. All leaders of bike groups must provide a list of participants, including name, country of origin, flight number, arrival and departure time, bicycle year, model and cost.
