Bonaire’s New Foundation Echo to Work with the Lora Parrot

Echo is Bonaire’s newest nature foundation and will spearhead conservation efforts for the endangered Lora parrot. Parrot research and conservation efforts over the last seven years by Dr. Sam Williamson, Dr. Rowan Martin, and Ms. Rhian Evans form the basis of the foundation.

This group is well known for its writings including “Parrotwatch” and “Ask Olivia.” Goals of the organization include continuing study of the parrots’ breeding biology and ecosystem, developing conservation techniques and sustainable use of nature.

The name Echo comes from Sam’s extensive conservation work with the Echo Parakeet in Mauritius. In the 1990’s there were only eight of these birds left, and thanks to diligent nature conservation efforts, today there are over 500. The goal is to use the knowledge and success of this project, to rebuild the parrot population on Bonaire.

Sam’s history with parrots and Bonaire goes back to 2003, when he first came to the island to observe the parrots. When he returned in 2006 with Rowan, their work really began as they studied parrot behavior and dangers to the Lora population. Their work here has gained international attention and they have traveled to Brazil, South Africa, Canada and the US, to discuss their activities. The World Parrot Trust has and will continue to fund and support their research.

Training and education will be of major importance going forward. The conservation work on Bonaire can be used to help Bonaire’s Loras but can also assist other endangered parrot populations in other countries. Scientists and masters students have come in the past to study and research, and will continue to do so going forward. Furthermore, Nos Lora and STINAPA have partnered in past efforts, and Echo will look for opportunities to work with them and other partners in the future. To read more click here.
