Bonaire offers so many over and under the water activities, but the latest to join the ranks for growing interest amongst tourists and locals is Kitesurfing. It's the same concept as windsurfing, a board is used, much smaller than a windsurf board, but the power to catch the wind is a billowing kite attached to lines that the kiter holds. Head south to Atlantis on any breezy day and watch in wonder as the colorful parachute-like kites carry the kiter skimming across the glistening waters. The man behind the scene is roguish Roan Jaspers, a lively, attractive kiter with over 7 years kiteboarding experience. He has been teaching for over 5 years and is certified by the International Kiteboarding Organization (IKO). Roan describes his kite site as being excellent for learning. Thanks to steady trade winds and warm water the beginner can revel in learning this new hot spot. Roan has two rescue boats which are essential at this offshore wind site. He and his team of instructors offer patience and steady knowledge making it a dream to learn. Roan and his IKO trained instructors follow this training model: Basically there are 4 modules to choose from:
1. Kite-flying introduction
2. Intro to kiteboarding (IKO certification)
3. Beginner kite boarder course (IKO certification)
4. Independent kite boarder course (IKO certification)
Roan has a vision to expand offering kids and women's clinics. He and event promoter Ann Phelan have plans to hold a kite competition in 2007. He has a large local following including 5 women who are visions of beauty on the water. Zwanette Kooij leads the pack having been kiting now over 3 years. She has quickly learned this high adrenaline sport making moves that are simply breathtaking. Her love of kiting has taken Zwanette (AKA as Swa) to Aruba, Margarita, Las Aves and this week Los Roques to feel the breeze.
Head down to Kite Beach located at Atlantis if not for anything else but a cold drink from the Kite Bus and a photo opportunity like none other.
